My Experience
Whilst training I was a volunteer with Cruse Bereavement Care for over three years until 2006, during that time I became an accredited volunteer and, after completing in house training, a children’s counsellor with Cruse. I also spent two years as a volunteer counsellor at the Old Mill Foundation, Penclawdd, a cancer centre specialising in alternative therapies.
I have been in private practice for the last three years and currently rent a room in the Natural Health Service in Killay Precinct, where I receive referrals from Cafcass Cymru as well as self referrals.
I also receive referrals from Women’s Aid, individuals who need to access Women’s Aid experience high levels of abuse which can result in depression, low self esteem and individuals suffering from the effects of trauma (see links).
I have been teaching the Certificate in Counselling skills at Gorseinon College for two years and completed my Certificate in Education in 2008.
Children and young people
Parents and carers often worry when a child has a problem that causes them to be sad, disruptive, angry and unable to cope or lacking concentration. You may be concerned about a child's development, eating or sleeping patterns and how they are getting along with family, friends and at school.
I work with children and young people offering a safe place to communicate and identify confusing emotions. For some children and young people, being able to communicate their experiences verbally may be difficult.
Play and art can help children/young people understand confused feelings and upsetting events that they haven't had the chance to sort out properly. Rather than having to explain what is troubling them, play or art can be used to communicate at their own level and at their own pace, without feeling threatened.
With emotional support children and young people can learn to understand more about their own feelings and thoughts. They may be able to make sense of the past, cope with the future as well as learn how to manage relationships and conflicts in more appropriate ways.
